Financial Literacy Through Fun And Games

Published on 28.9.2015

Budgeting for one day’s needs and wants could be difficult. What about five months?

That was the challenge that three Home Credit “families” faced last Sep. 28 at the Spark Place

office in Cubao during the “Useful Money” game. Fifteen participants from the Operations Department played the game. They were grouped into three families: ROSARIO family, BUENAVISTA and GUTIEREZ.

During the game three “family” teams had to effectively plan monthly expenses to get maximum number of corresponding points. Each of the financial decisions had its own effects – either gaining or losing points for the family.
For the first month, the discussion and decision-making process among members of each family were longer and more intense. It turned out that while families may have collective “needs”, members in each would also like to spend for what may be considered as “wants”. Budgeting indeed proved to require a careful balancing act, planning and cooperation to satisfy all affected members.

But as they proceeded to the following months, budgeting became easier and more fun for the families. The top expense priorities every month trended toward Utilities, Transportation, groceries. Spending habits for recreation like movies, theater, and gadgets varied for each family throughout the five-month period. Expenditures on things (like books) that could result to added benefits were rewarded with extra points. On the other hand, insensitive spending that could lead to conflicts in succeeding months incurred deductions.

In the end, only one family emerged as the most effective in balancing a monthly budget. With a total score of 142 points, Buenavista emerged victorious over Gutierez (126 points) and Rosario (108 points).
While not everyone won the game, the practical lessons of the game will surely help all participants to become winners in real-life management of finances. Ultimately, the goal of the game is to show that determining needs and wants need not to be a dilemma if we approach budgeting wisely.
